LOWELL -- William R. Nassau lived by the motto work hard and enjoy what you do.
As president and CEO of Whiteco Outdoor Advertising International, he was at
the helm of one of the world's most successful billboard companies.
Mr. Nassau, 74, of Lowell, died Saturday in his California home, after losing a
battle to cancer.
"Bill was my right hand man for 41 years," said Dean White, chairman of the
board and CEO of Whiteco Industries Inc.
White describes Mr. Nassau as his "close friend and partner ... a visionary,"
who was never afraid to meet a challenge head on.
One of the most innovative projects Mr. Nassau helped launch for Whiteco
Industries was an outdoor advertising division that is now in the Far East.
White credits Mr. Nassau for having the vision to promote Whiteco's international connection to China.
He said Mr. Nassau was first appointed in 1958 to head Whiteco's Outdoor
Advertising Division. The successful operation spanned the United States for
many years.
Jack Ayers, retired president of Whiteco Outdoor Advertising, said Mr. Nassau
was his mentor when he joined the corporation more than 30 years ago.
"Bill was someone who showed excellence on the job and gained the respect of
all who were lucky enough to work with him," Ayers said.
Although he was long past retirement age, the prospect of retiring took a back
seat to his daily agenda, said his daughter, Amy Taylor.
"Dad never wanted to retire ... he loved his job and always liked to expand his
horizons ... and with his last job, he was able to do just that," Taylor said.
Mr. Nassau, a native of Crown Point and graduate of Crown Point High School,
was a U.S. Navy veteran of World War II. He was president and CEO of Whiteco
International, former president of the Outdoor Advertising Division of Whiteco
Industries and former chairman of the Outdoor Advertising Association of
America.
He was a member of the Youche Country Club, the Lakes Country Club in Palm
